3 Ways to Build a Personal Relationship with God

Want a purposeful life? Here are 3 practical ways to strengthen your walk with God.

As we grow up, we find ourselves drowning amidst deadlines, bills, and broken routines. We begin to feel frustrated and overwhelmed with the world, looking to ‘take a break’ or ‘escape’. Being overwhelmed could also indicate, we are being called by God.

We can live a peaceful and satisfying life by learning how God designed us to live. In this article, we will learn to build a stable and fulfilling relationship with God.

Pray to God

Praying to God helps find a sense of peace, comfort, and reconciliation with our Heavenly Father. Be it through a short prayer for strength on a hectic day, or a long meditative prayer of confession and reconciliation at night- I always strive to be in His presence.

Learn to Pray

Close the doors, bow down in worship and acknowledge His divine presence. God really does listen to your prayer, revere His holy presence. Your prayer will be answered- but first, you must believe in Him.

More often than not, our faith turns into a public display of righteousness. This results in us losing touch with God as we become more focused towards maintaining our public image of spirituality. When we work in private, God rewards us. When we work in public, the people reward us.

Practicality & Power of Prayer

Pray for the problems that you are facing in your life, because we cannot work for the Lord while we are in chains. Be it a bad habit, a past mistake, debts, behavioural problems, whatever it is- ask the Lord to have mercy on you.

You must let God perform His miracle in your life so that you may have a true testimony to share. Faith is a divine blessing in itself, take the first step and let God help you. Many Bible verses like Psalm 1 and 23 are like prayers. They are a personal

reminder of God’s faithfulness to us even when we are anxious about the future.

Scriptures — the Word of God

The Holy Bible provides words of comfort and wisdom to us. It helps us mentally align ourselves with the fruitful way of the Christian life. We learn to make better decisions and live a happier and purposeful life.

Understanding the Nature of God

In order for us to build a personal relationship with God, we must work on knowing His promises, will, and guidance for our lives as well as for humanity. The guidance for Christians can be found centrally in the four gospels highlighting the life and teachings of the LORD Jesus Christ.

Start Reading from the New Testament

For a Christian who has not yet read the Holy Bible, I would encourage them to not start from the first book (Genesis) itself. This is because it may result in confusion. Reading the Holy Bible in a Christ-centric order may provide clarity and structure to many with the urge to know the scriptures.

I have found this reading sequence particularly useful, emphasising the core message of Christian life and guidance:

1. Gospel of Luke (Story-like) OR John (Word-heavy & thought-provoking)

2. Matthew 5–7 (Jesus’ teachings on life and faith)

3. Acts of the Apostles (work of the Holy Spirit, the Church, and the disciples of Jesus)

4. Proverbs (Wisdom and guidance on life)

By covering the core message of the Christian life, we can proceed to learn more from each book of the Holy Bible without feeling lost. Unfortunately, many cannot even bring themselves to open the Bible. This is because we are distracted. This brings us to our final point and the cornerstone to doing God’s will.

A Purposeful Life

“If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favourable.” — Seneca

A purposeful life lifts us above the noise of the crowd. We begin to see God’s plan for us in the establishment of His kingdom. We look forward to even tiring days when the outcome of our labour is desirable.

Secular Wisdom on Psychology

Psychologists talk about the path of least resistance (temptation to choose easy paths) and the expediency factor (impatience) are two of the default human mechanisms that lead to their downfall.

The solution? An objective. This means that when we are focused on a goal, we are naturally more successful in life. This is because we are not relying on our default mechanism of sloth and failure.

Regaining our Focus & Clarity

When we feel too exhausted to do anything- it’s because we are mentally overwhelmed. One of the leading reasons for mental exhaustion today can be attributed to our high usage of phone apps that constantly demand and capture our attention- feeding us with more information than we can digest.

It is critical to control our activities to regain our focus by replacing them with time devoted to meditating on God’s word. For example, we should set aside time to not engage in mindless doomscrolling. During this time, we can pray and meditate to attain mental serenity.

In Conclusion

Through practicing a personal life of service to God, we can truly break free from our mental burdens and live a life filled with peace, purpose, and perseverance. Take your first step today towards developing an evergreen relationship with God.

Draw closer to Him today with a short personal prayer:

“Almighty God, shape my life
so that I may walk in your wisdom.
Bless me with your comfort and strength
as I submit to your will.
I pray in the name of our LORD Jesus Christ.
Amen.
